Uncovering the neural mechanisms of learning and memory.

The J. Zhang Research Group is a neuroscience & neural engineering laboratory established by Dr. Jie (Jack) Zhang in Northwestern University’s Department of Biomedical Engineering.

We develop technologies that expand our ability to observe brain activity and use these tools to uncover cell-specific neural mechanisms, especially those underlying learning & memory consolidation. Our lab takes a cross-disciplinary approach, combining innovation in circuits and imaging technologies with systems neuroscience and in vivo experiments.

Our goal is to build a mechanistic understanding of biological intelligence, providing new principles for artificial intelligence and new approaches to understanding and treating brain disorders.
